Denver Zoo makes history

Quadruplets were born at the Denver Zoo on July 9th! This is a very rare occurrence--this is only the 5th documented birth of quads at a U.S. Zoo. Congratulations & good luck to Mommy Sophia!

When a red panda gave birth at the Taiyuan Zoo in China's Shanxi province on June 25, but rejected the cubs, a local dog became a surrogate to them. They are now doing well. :)

Houston Zoo gets a new red panda

The Houston Zoo announces the arrival of Toby, The Cutest Animal in the World.

They are also having a cool contest that I would love to win--unfortunately one must be a resident of Texas to enter.

Update on Knoxville cubs

It sounds like little Samuel and Henry Ford are doing very well. Samuel is coming to the Erie Zoo in April, and apparently he is quite outgoing. His brother is on the shy side, and will be moving to the Staten Island Zoo.

Erie Zoo to get a new pair of red pandas

The female cub from the Boise Zoo and a male cub from the Knoxville Zoo will be coming to the Erie Zoo. The zoo is hoping they will hit it off and be ready for the 2010 breeding season. Erie has been very successful with red panda births, having 11 since 2003 with three different breeding pairs. They are both adorable, and I can't wait to visit them later this year!

Soon to be named cub from Boise:

Red Panda magazine article

Fighting for the Firefox
By Wendee Holtcamp

"Nepal’s red panda is getting help from a small group of local forest guardians, but the highly endangered mammal still faces a troubled future as its habitat is lost to deforestation"

I haven't been able to find this magazine (National Wildlife) in the stores (anyone have one they could spare?), but the entire article can be found here.

A really good Flickr set

This is a really nice set of photos from Patti Panda, taken at the Detroit Zoo during the introduction of their new female red panda to Rupert.

Another cub makes her debut

A cub born at the Boise Zoo on July 3, 2008 has finally been coming out into public view. I don't know why she was hiding so long, because she's just adorable! The zoo is having a contest to name her. If you win, there is a very nice prize, so if you live close to Boise, you may want to enter . The contest runs between January 12-16.
